Update on the New Math Curriculum
EXCITING NEWS... After about a month of work with the new math textbooks from the Math Connects series, I am pleased with the work I'm seeing in my classroom. The series supports a deep understanding of the topics we're covering. Nearly every other lesson in the textbook works with hands-on modelling techniques that really allow the students to see what's happening behind the numbers. I have also been working with integrating technology into the math series using virtual manipulatives on the internet for modelling concepts on the SmartBoard, incorporating technology into our class review games for tests and quizzes, and utilizing videos from Discovery Education to illustrate mathematical concepts. The textbook series we purchased lines up well with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and incorporates real world problems in nearly every lesson to help students grasp how the math they're learning connects to areas outside of school. I'm very excited about where our school's math program is going!
Instructor Bio.
My name is Leah MacQueen. I currently teach Middle School Math at Bishop Baraga Catholic School in the mornings and Physical Education at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Norway in the afternoons. I graduated from Northern Michigan University in December of 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics/Elementary Education and a minor in Integrated Science. I currently have my provisional Michigan teach certificate which allows me to teach all subjects K-5 (or K-8 in a self-contained classroom). I have a Integrated Science endorsement and a Mathematics endorsement which allow me to teach math and science in grades 6-8.
I was thrilled to find this job opportunity upon moving to the Iron Mountain area this summer. My husband found a job at Systems Control, and I moved here after our marriage in July. We are loving the area and are beginning to explore the downtown as well as the many scenic outdoor areas. When not at school, I enjoy running, swimming, biking, reading, and traveling to visit friends and family in the Marquette and Houghton areas.
